Santiago R. Vargas passed away at his home in Porterville California on May 2, 2021, at the age of 96. Santiago was preceded in death by his wife Rosa who passed in 1998 at the age of 73, and his sons Enrique “Henry” Vargas and Santiago “Jimmy” Vargas. He is survived by a son Jose Luis Vargas (Sally), daughters; Elisa Moreno (Albino), Janie Baldwin, Vangie Trejo, Mary Vargas, Dolores Vallejo, Angela Pennuneri, Irene Bernabe (Auxillio) and Leticia Tsuboi (Mike) and honorary daughter San Juanita Baldwin. Also, surviving Santiago are 40 grandchildren, and a multitude of great and great-great, grandchildren.
Santiago was born in Weslaco, Texas he spent most of his life in Porterville, California. Santiago was a migrant farmworker until he landed a custodial position with Porterville Unified School District, from which he retired. Santiago was a skilled carpenter, and no task was too small or too big for him. He enjoyed gardening, music, and storytelling. He volunteered as a Foster Grandparent at Porterville Developmental Center, where he was awarded a 10-year certificate of Appreciation. He was a faithful Catholic and would pray his Rosary devoutly.
Viewing will be held at Myers Chapel on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 from 5-7 p.m. (Rosary @ 6p.m), Mass will be held Wednesday May 12, 2021 at 11 a.m., at Saint Anne’s Church. Interment will follow St. Anne’s Cemetery, Porterville, CA. There will be a gathering at Veteran’s Park immediately following the graveside service. Facemasks will need to be worn during the indoor services.
