Norma Evangeline Sierra Chacon came into the world on June 6, 1952, the 5thdaughter of 7 daughters and 7 sons born to Raynaldo and Mary Sierra of Delano, California.
Norma went to primary and secondary schools in the city of Delano, where she was a showstopper with her handmade outfits and her quick wit and gift of humor. She enjoyed babysitting, sewing, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and her sisters. In 1970, she married Mario Chacon of McFarland, California. She gave birth to their first child, Mario Jr., while her husband was serving our country in the Marines, stationed in Okinawa, Japan. They went on to have five children, and Norma spent the first 15 years of her marriage being a stay-at-home mother and a homemaker.
When all of her children were a little older and in school, she began a new chapter of service; providing the dietary needs of the elderly in a Convalescent Hospital in the city of Porterville. Although she was a fulltime employee, she always made time for football games, practices, choir concerts, band competitions, and providing home-cooked meals for her children and so many neighborhood children who found their way to her dinner table. She was "Ma" to so many more than her 5 children. In the mid-90s, Norma was an independent business owner. She ran a daycare center, providing childcare for the Porterville, Strathmore, and Lindsay community. She worked to provide low-cost childcare for the lower- economic community and farm labor working families, and because of her love for children, the job was a reward in itself.
Eventually, this sparked her desire to serve her community in a greater capacity. She made the brave decision to go back to school and began her college education in her 40s to pursue an Associate of Arts degree. In 1999, when her youngest daughters were both graduating from high school, she made the selfless decision to postpone her own college graduation so that her focus could be on them. In 2000, after moving to Visalia, Norma earned her degree and graduated from the College of Sequoias. She began her career as a social worker, specializing in public assistance programs. She provided 16 years of service and retired with the Kings County Health and Human Services. Earning her college degree, serving those in need in her community, being Mama and Nana to her children, grandchildren and others' children in need of a Ma or Nana - these are among Norma's greatest accomplishments in her lifetime.
On February 20, 2025, Norma Evangeline Sierra returned home, joining several loved ones who preceded her in death, to include her parents, five brothers, and her firstborn son, Mario Jr. She is survived by her son Bobby Chacon and his children, Sabrynna, Bobby Jr., and Camila Chacon; daughter Teresa Gonzalez, her husband Harper and her children, Desmond Cleaver and Olivia Madrigal, as well as a great-granddaughter Anistyn Chacon and a cat-friend named Kitty; daughter Debbie Bratton, her husband Daniel, and her children, Cameran, Kiley, Kaydence, and Daniel; daughter Estella Evaro and her children, Monique Vasquez and Jose Hernandez; and grandchildren born to her late son Mario Jr., Monae, Janessa, Ayden, and Madelyn Chacon, as well as a great-grandson, Xavier Chacon. Norma lived a full life of 72 years and was richly blessed with family, friends, and a fulfilling life of extending her love and service to others.
