Millard Harley Phillips

September 25, 1941 — March 15, 2025

Harley Millard Phillips was born in Texas September 25, 1941 to the late Bennett and Beatrice (Dowell) Phillips. He passed peacefully in his home March 15, 2025 surrounded by family at the age of 83. Harley's journey in life was one of service, hard work, and heartfelt connection. Raised and educated in Porterville, California through college, he embraced life's adventures with the same spirit that led him to serve in the US Navy, where he forged many amazing friendships throughout the years. Marrying Marilyn Ballew, with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of love and partnership February 2023, Harley's life was enriched by shared adventures-from the early days in Alameda to a vibrant career in agriculture. Whether he was working with his parents in the cattle business in Carrizo Plain, working alongside his father-in-law Glen Ballew with farming, advising in pest control or his immensely enjoyable and rewarding time working for Wilson Ag specializing in orchard removal... Harley's passion for the land was unmistakable.

In his later years, he delighted in farming lemons on his cherished 30 acres with the picturesque view of his trees and the mountains, a testament to his deep connection to nature and his gift for nurturing life. A master of woodworking, Harley reconstructed the charming farm home that was built and, in the family (originating with Marilyn's parents) since the early 1900's. In addition, Harley built a special home on the family ranch-a legacy of his love and care for his parents. This home would later become his favorite space...his office. Memories were made and stories shared. His love for simple pleasures, from watching the rodeo and vintage Western movies on his big screen to welcoming daily visits from his loyal farming sidekick Angel and longtime family friend Julie, spoke to his kind, sincere and generous nature. Harley had three sons that meant the absolute world to him. He especially treasured his family and all the frequent gatherings. He really enjoyed spending the last decade living across the street from his great-grandson "Little Brent", being the recipient of Melissa and Darcy's home cooked meals and imparting wisdom about farming to Debbie. He designed his world around him and he was content. We find peace and love in the imprint he leaves on the ranch.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, his beloved wife Marilyn, and middle son Timothy. He is survived by his loving family...Sons Jim (Debbie), and Charley (Darcy). Grandchildren Brent (Melissa, great-grandchild LB), Jenna, Morgan (Luke, Posie), Jackson (Taylor), Abigail, Chaz (Hannah, Wesley, August), Hunter (Kevin), McKenna, Chloe. Extended great-grandchildren Melony (Braxton) and Ashley. Sister Judy Phillips Fillerup, many nieces, nephews, cousins and VERY dear extended family members, Angel Rangel and Julie Hatcher.
