On a pleasant Saturday afternoon 75-year-old Dr. Annie Laurie Bond of Lindsay hitched up her horse and buggy and drove to the Faure family home south of Porterville to assist in the birth of a baby. Revealing his life-long stubborn nature, the baby, Jean Leon Faure, would not arrive until the next morning, Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938.
Jean was the youngest of seven children born to Joseph and Rose Marie Faure and was a life-long resident of Porterville. Growing up on the family ranch, Jean helped raise and harvest wheat and citrus, and enjoyed raising sheep as a member of the Vandalia 4-H club. He attended the old one-room Hope school, graduated from Porterville Union High School in 1956, and later Porterville Junior College.
In 1961, Jean enlisted in the United States Air Force where he spent time in Texas, Idaho, and Guam working as a military payroll specialist. He was honorably discharged in 1965.
Over the next half-century Jean worked for a variety of local businesses, including the old Smith's Market Bakery, the Food Banks Bakery and nearly 20 years at the Standard Register plant. Following the local closure of Standard Register, he worked in retail sales including several years at the old Town and Country Drug store, and later Walmart.
Jean was a gifted artist and enjoyed oil painting, needlecraft, and sculpting. But his true passion was cake decorating and he is well remembered for the dozens of beautiful wedding, anniversary, and birthday cakes he created.
Following a short illness, Jean passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at the age of 85.
Jean is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Emma Nuckols, Josephine Pratt, Louise Davenport, and Rose Marie Moench, and his brother Cyrille Faure and all their spouses. He is also preceded in death by nephews Dan Nuckols, Justin Nuckols, Tom Pratt, and Roger Davenport, and nieces Terri Nuckols and Debbie Nuckols.
He is survived by his brother Joseph Faure Jr. and sister-in-law Lucille, his life-long best friend Gordon Belt, cousin Florine Judeen, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
A graveside service for Jean will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023, at the Vandalia Cemetery, 565 E. Scranton Avenue in Porterville. A reception will follow at the First Congregational Church, 165 E. Mill Street in Porterville.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Jean's name to the Porterville First Congregational Church, the Porterville Historical Museum, or Sierra View Hospital's Roger Goode Cancer Center.
