Hubert Harrison Craig was born in Loudon, Tennessee on July 20, 1934. He passed away in Springville, CA on July 10, 2023, at the age of 88 (just 10 days before his 89th birthday). His parents were Dewey Rush Craig and Dora Edna Craig.
He attended Loudon Grammar School where he was active in basketball. In 1949 he moved to Porterville where he was a freshman at Porterville High School. While in High school he played basketball and baseball. He worked at the Vest Pocket Market where he met his future wife, Juanita Pittenger. He attended Porterville College where he also played basketball. Hubert and Juanita were married in 1954.
Hubert served in the United States Army, during that time he and Juanita lived in Germany for one year. He was active in Church League and City League Softball. He was on championship teams in Church League basketball for many years. Hubert was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 60 years. He worked at the Vest Pocket Market for 12 years before purchasing Craig's Stop and Shop Market on Putnam Avenue. He was well known and loved by many during the 20 years he was in business.
Hubert was preceded in death by his father, Rush Dewey Craig; his brother, Dewey Allen Craig; and his sister, Virginia Folmar. He is survived by his three children, Pamela Hughes (David Johnson) of Porterville, CA, Roger Craig (Nancy VanRuiten) of Arroyo Grande, CA and Janna Hert (Steve Hert) of Visalia, CA; grandchildren, Michael Scott (Fresno, Ca.), Chalaunt Craig, Kasie Craig, Skylar Nettleton (Arroyo Grande, CA), Jarred Hughes, Chad Hughes (Porterville, CA), Brigette Barnes and Dillon Craig (Visalia, CA); and 14 great grandchildren.
Hubert and Juanita have traveled extensively during their nearly 68 years of marriage, visiting all fifty states and many lighthouses. They also traveled to Europe and went on several cruises. Their "home away from home" was at their place in Pismo Beach. Hubert (Popo as his family members all called him) will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, children and grandchildren.
A Visitation will be held at Myers Chapel in Porterville, CA on Thursday, July 20, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church in Porterville, CA on Friday, July 21, 2023, at 10:00 AM. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
