Fernando Flemate, a lifelong resident of Porterville, California passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024. He was 91. Fernando was born on May 30, 1932 to Aurelio and Fernanda Flemate in Porterville, CA.
Fernando attended local schools and graduated from Porterville High School in 1952. On November 20, 1952, he was inducted into the United States Army 7th Infantry Regiment and served in the 3rd and 45th Infantry Divisions. During the Korean War, he earned the National Defense Service medal, an United Nations Service medal, Korean Service medal, a Combat Infantry badge, two Bronze Stars and was awarded an Honorable Discharge on September 16, 1954.
Following his tour in Korea, Fernando worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a crew boss with "The Black Eagles" Hotshot crew fighting fires as needed. He also worked at Sierra Forest Products in Terra Bella, Ca for approximately 30 years until his retirement in 1997.
Fernando or "Uncle Fernie" as he was affectionately called, loved camping at the beach with family and recalling his days fighting fires with his crew. He loved working in his yard and was the envy of the neighborhood.
Fernando was married and survived by the love of his life, Lucy Flemate, for 64 years; two daughters, Laura Ogás and Sandra Flemate; and his only grandson, Eric C. Ogás. He is also survived by his sisters, Cecilia Estrada, Alicia Camarena and Helen Villagomez. He is preceded in death by his father; mother; brothers, Aurelio (Wally) Flemate, Roy Flemate, Robert Flemate, Rudy Flemate; an infant brother, named Juan; sisters, Vickie Ambriz, Margaret Salas and Rosie Sanchez.
A visitation will be held at Myers Chapel (248 N. E St., Porterville, CA) on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with recital of the rosary beginning at 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church (378 North "F" Street, Porterville, CA) on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow at St. Anne's Cemetery in Porterville, CA.
Fernando will be remembered for his loving nature, dedication to family, and his zest for life. He leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories that will be treasured by all who knew him. May he Rest in Eternal Peace.
