Elmira Bethlene Smith

November 1, 1926 — September 15, 2021

Elmira Bethlene Smith, 94 of Porterville, passed away Wednesday September 15, 2021.

Born in Woodruff, Kansas on November 1, 1926 to Jacob and Alda Seegrist. Elmira "Ellie" enjoyed growing up in a traditional hard working family along with her two brothers, Bud and Sam and her three sisters, Edith, Ilene and Marjorie. She often recounted the fond memories associated with the family's travels throughout Kansas, Wyoming and New Mexico. She would refer to them as "some of the best days of her life". Ellie spoke with appreciation for the hard work of her father as a provider and "spiritual" head, along with the supportive efforts of her mother in training and caring for the children.

Elmira's family eventually settled in Southern California in the 40's where she met and married Sherman Clyde Smith Jr. in 1948. She gave birth to: Karen in 1950, Steven in 1953, Susan in 1954, Sherman III in 1965 and Jennifer Lynn in 1970. She worked hard as a homemaker and at times worked outside the home to supplement the household income. The couple settled in Porterville, California in the mid 70's.

Elmira had quite a large family consisting of: 13 Grandchildren, 33 Great Grandchildren and 18 Great Great Grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Sherman Jr., her brothers and sisters and daughter Jennifer Lynn (at 5 days old), some nieces and nephews, and sadly a few of her grandchildren.

Elmira was certain that the Bible's promise to restore the earth to a "Paradise" was soon to be fulfilled under the ruler ship of God's Kingdom. She looked forward to being reunited at that time with the loved ones who had fallen asleep in death when the foretold earthly resurrection takes place under the Leadership of Christ Jesus. See: John 5:28, 29, Mathew 6:10, Luke 23:43, Psalms 37:9-11
