In the early evening of October 20th 2023, we lost our beloved Diana Margaret Brookey, wife, mother, mother In-law, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was 78 years young.
Diana was born on June 13th 1945 to the late Floyd & Margaret Copeland. Diana was the youngest of 6 children. In her younger years she loved to work on the family's 150+ acre walnut ranch, which was nicknamed "Happy Acres Ranch", it was here that she learned to work hard. She loved to be outside with her dad doing all the ranch chores including taking care of the animals, which they had plenty. She learned how to drive the tractors, maintain the machinery and use all the tools. These lessons proved to be valuable throughout her whole life.
Diana had one child, Cynthia Diane, in 1963. She was a young mother and she instilled many of the valuable lessons she learned throughout her life to her daughter. Diana worked at Lindsay Olive Growers for 30 years, 10 years at Tharps Trucking Inc, and 5 years at the Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma (most of her younger years she worked two jobs). Diana was hard working, tenacious and feisty. She had a way with words that could make you laugh or get you moving!
Together with her life partner and husband, Dale Brookey, they loved to ride their Harley Davidson motorcycles, travel on their bike across the country, go on cruises, RV, camp, and fish & boat. They worked together on the 15 acre ranch they purchased in Oklahoma in 2003, just as she did when she was a young girl growing up. In 2014 she found her way back to Porterville to be closer to her daughter, grandchildren, family and friends.
In the 90's Diana volunteered her time as a "Big Sister" through the Big brother Big sister organization. Her little sister was a 9 year old girl named Christy; she was very involved in our lives for several years. In 2014 she became an Elk member, during her time as an Elk she worked on many of their fundraising events and even helped with the cooking for events which she loved the most.
Some of her many other joys were sewing, writing poetry (which she received accolades), yard sales, planning meals with family & friends, cooking her famous fried chicken dinner, going to the beach, using her tools (to create, fix or remodel her house), shopping, planning for Christmas, decorating for all the holidays, and talking to her friends and family on the phone. In the last few years she enjoyed gardening and working in her yard the most, enjoying a glass of Crown & Coke every now and then and lastly she loved her animals. Diana was an animal lover her entire life, she always had house pets of many varieties and farm pets alike. Currently her two little Chihuahuas, Meko and Lucy are sure to miss her too.
Diana grew up in church and has belonged to several churches throughout her life. She recently became a member at the Church of God in Porterville and became a greeter on Sunday morning services. Diana loved her Savior; she loved singing and worshiping the gospel. Diana was a very loving, caring and giving person to all that knew her. She especially showed love to her family with hugs, kisses and "I love you's". Now we fall asleep without you close, but we hold you forever in our hearts.
Diana is preceded in death by her father, Floyd Copeland; mother, Margaret Copeland; and her only brother, Charles Copeland.
Diana is survived by her husband, Vernon "Dale" Brookey (Porterville); daughter, Cynthia Green & husband Eddie Green (Porterville); granddaughters, Chelsea Weldon (Hawaii), Brooke Baxstresser & husband Mike Baxstresser (Paso Robles); Grandson, Tanner Weldon & wife Kaye Weldon (San Diego); Great Grand-daughter, Taelynn Diane Weldon; Sisters, Yvonne Cleveland, Essie Mae Albritton, Bille Mills & husband Tom Mills, Dorothy Casebolt, and Many nieces and nephews and their families.
